Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in late April, 1775. Lauded as “the painter of light,” Turner was a British Romantic master of stirring landscape, treacherous seas, and sublime disaster.  Witnessing the terrifying event from the opposite bank of the Thames, Turner recorded what he saw in quick sketches that became the basis for this dramatic painting.”The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, October 16, 1834,” by Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1834 – 35.

Lisa Oppenheim, Heliograms, 1876/2011

Gold is the element most closely associated with the sun. This connection has been alchemical, visual, and metaphorical: The sun as that which produces power, and gold it’s symbol. The relationship between photography and gold can be traced back to the medium’s roots, in the 1840’s it was used as an alternative to silver as a sensitizing agent. Oppenheim refers to this technique in Heliograms.
